Art Process

Platinum Printing

Platinum printing is an alternative photographic process that dates back to the 1800's. Derived from other alternative processes like albumen and salt prints, this process was popular with professional photographers due to its longevity and archival qualities. The process involves brushing a mixture of platinum and palladium metals onto specialized paper. This chemical combination acts as a light sensitive material and any surface of the paper containing the solution will react to ultraviolet light. After laying a negative on top of the sensitized paper and exposing it to an ultra violet light source, the paper is treated with a developing solution (see video on the right). The resulting prints are known for their unique tonality and are among the most permanent, archival images available from any photographic process.

RJ PRINT LAB

Alternative Printing Processes Service
Lab & Learning Centre

I met Roberto a number of years ago while assisting him on a job
in Los Angeles. If almost by fate, we reconnected years later when I saw he had posted about platinum printing. I had only recently decided to utilize the process for my project and immediately reached out. Not only has Roberto become an invaluable mentor, but he has also offered to allow me to use his lab to print the project. He is an alternative process wizard, offering workshops and specializing in a number of photographic processes. BOSTICK & SULLIVAN

Providing supplies and expertise for handcrafted photography for over 40 years

It’s always been a pleasure working with Bostick & Sullivan. Even when I decided to take my printing overseas to England, I knew I’d still order my materials through my favorite family-owned photography suppliers. The company is a crucial player in keeping alternative processes alive. After my first conversation with the owner, Melody, she featured Quest of Sages in her company’s newsletter that month. For a comprehensive look at the complete platinum printing process, watch their video and visit their website for more information.
