Book II: Europe I

Europe I

My second excursion for the project brought me to Europe

During the summer of 2021, after the tropics and jungles of Central America, I visited 9 countries throughout Europe.

I invite you to follow the three month adventure from Portugal to Switzerland below.

Countries Visited:

PORTUGAL

Chapter 9: The World’s Biggest Wave

In the coastal village of Nazaré, their claim to fame is consistently producing some of the largest waves in the world. Aside from the surf, I ventured to the picturesque seaside town to learn more about their traditionally dressed women who work in the bustling fishing industry.

MALTA

Chapter 10: A Blast From the Past

Traveling to this small island nation in the Mediterranean is like stepping back in time to a great medieval fortress. Many of their traditions are still upheld today and I had the pleasure of meeting one of the medieval reenactors who participates in firing off a daily ceremonial canon from the capital city.

SAN MARINO

Chapter 11: A Comic Convention in the World’s Oldest Republic

San Marino is a small, hilltop nation completely surrounded by Italy. It prides itself as the world’s oldest republic. When I made my way to the stone medieval streets, the last thing I was expecting was to be greeted by the likes of Mario, Pikachu and Harry Potter.

ITALY

Chapter 12: A Welcome Distraction

Enamored by art and culture, I extended my stay in Italy to an entire month. The culmination of the four week tour took me to Venice, where I would search for one of the country’s most iconic ferrymen.

GERMANY

Chapter 13: Castles and Lakes in Bavaria

After an extended stay along the Mediterranean, I ventured to Munich, the capital of Germany’s Bavarian state. Steeped in culture and clichés, I was on a quest to discover more about the region’s famed dress; The Dirndl.

THE NETHERLANDS

Chapter 14: The Dutch Culture of North Holland

While in Belize, I had the honor of befriending one of the country’s most revered cultural icons. Requesting that we travel to her hometown of Gales Point to take the portrait, I rented a jeep in Belize City and we embarked on one of the most memorable roadtrips of my life.

LUXEMBOURG

Chapter 15: An Unexpected Detour

As my days in The Netherlands came to an end, I was coordinating with

LIECHTENSTEIN

Chapter 15: Two Portraits in One Day
Part I

After five months, my Central American adventure was coming to an end. I was losing steam and having a hard time finding someone to photograph in Guatemala. I eventually decided to leave without taking the portrait, until a volcanic eruption grounded my plane and provided one last chance to make it happen.
